MEMO/11/474

Brussels, 30 June 2011

Commissioner Malmström welcomes political agreement on the Directive on combating sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children and child pornography.

The negotiators of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission found a political consensus on the text of the Directive on combating sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children and child pornography (COM 2010/94). The Directive was proposed by the Commission in March 2010.

Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner responsible for Home Affairs, said: "I welcome this agreement which confirms the EU's commitment to fight sexual abuse and the sexual exploitation of children, by preventing the offences, protecting the victims and punishing the criminals behind this repellent crime. The response of the EU cannot be too clear or too resolute. Whatever the EU can possibly do against these kinds of abuse, the EU must and will do. The agreed text is a balanced compromise between the institutions. I am confident that the Directive can now be adopted swiftly, creating an ambitious common legal framework that will make it easier to fight these horrendous crimes."

Next steps:

The European Parliament and the Council will now vote on the Directive, to formally adopt it.
