HR/VP Catherine Ashton appoints the Director for Middle East in the European External Action Service
Catherine Ashton, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the European Commission, today appointed Christian Berger to the post of Director for North Africa, Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Iraq in the European External Action Service(EEAS).
"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Christian Berger as Director for Middle East. With his experience, Christian will be a great asset to the team dealing with the Middle East Peace Process and the EU's response to the Arab Spring," said Catherine Ashton.
Christian Berger, an Austrian national, is currently the Head of the EU's office in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, one of the largest EU missions in the Middle East. Previously he was, among other things, EU Representative to the Quartet Special Envoy and political advisor on the Middle East in former DG Relex, and was in charge of the Commission's crisis response and peace-building unit. He has also worked with the United Nations for several years in the Middle East, including peace-keeping, and with the OSCE in Vienna, before joining the EU institutions in 1997.
