Message of congratulations from President Barroso, to Mr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
On behalf of the European Commission, I am writing to congratulate you on your election as president of the federal republic of Nigeria.
The European Union and Nigeria already enjoy very close relations. I would like to assure you of the European Commission's commitment to working with you and your government in pursuit of the further development of your country and in particular the ongoing efforts to deepen democracy and the rule of law, to combat corruption, to improve efficiency, respect for human rights and good governance, and to promote economic development for the long term benefit of Nigeria's citizens.
I hope that with your election we may work towards deepening the political dialogue between the European Union and Nigeria on the priorities under our joint framework - the joint way forward. We value Nigeria's leadership in promoting peace, stability and development in the sub-region, and in Africa.
You are welcome in Brussels to discuss these issues in the future and i wish you every success in the exercise of your mandate.
