Message of congratulation from European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy to Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada
President Barroso and President van Rompuy have sent the following message to Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada:
"Dear Prime Minister,
We would like to congratulate you on your election victory and reappointment as Prime Minister of Canada, and wish you every success in the exercise of your mandate.
We look forward to continuing close cooperation with you and your government as we strengthen and extend the strategic partnership between the EU and Canada. The on-going negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement are progressing well. Its conclusion will bring further benefit to the peoples of Canada and the European Union and will reflect our common engagement to promote free trade and counter protectionism. We also look forward to working with Canada on an upgrade of our overall relations to match in the political sphere the ambition of our trade and economic relationship, and to build a strong platform for future cooperation worthy of the strategic nature of our relations.
The European Union values highly Canada’s contributions to our crisis management operations and Election Observation Missions, and our close work together in the UN, G8 and G20 contexts on multilateral and global challenges, from economic governance to non-proliferation and counter-terrorism.
Please accept, dear Prime Minister, the assurance of our highest consideration”.
