Statement by President Barroso on the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to assist Japan
President Barroso has made the following statement on the situation in Japan:
"Let me make some comments regarding the very dramatic situation in Japan. I would like to use this opportunity to inform you that we have just received from Japan a detailed request for European assistance in order to address the consequences of the devastating earthquake of last Friday.
In light of the difficulties on the ground, the Japanese authorities have pleaded for a coordinated European Union response, focused on in-kind assistance to bring relief to the affected population.
I am pleased to announce that the European Union has therefore presented a consolidated offer to the Japanese authorities. We continue to stand by the Japanese people and the Japanese authorities in these very difficult moments. Let me express also my admiration for the determined and courageous way in which the Japanese people are reacting to such an adversity."
