Autumn 2010 Eurobarometer: EU citizens support strong EU action to resolve crisis

77% of Europeans think that stronger coordination of economic and fiscal policies among EU Member States would be effective in fighting the economic crisis, according to the Autumn 2010 Eurobarometer, the bi-annual opinion poll organised by the EU. The survey was conducted from mid-November to early December 2010 and published today. 75% of Europeans support a stronger supervision by the EU of the activities of the most important international financial groups, an increase of three percentage points from the last Eurobarometer in Spring 2010 (IP/10/1071). The support for strong EU action to resolve the crisis comes as the European Commission approved today the first Annual Growth Survey, which launches the "European Semester" that will ensure better upstream coordination of fiscal and economic policies (see IP/11/22 and MEMO/11/14).

"The Autumn 2010 Eurobarometer figures are very encouraging and demonstrate that European citizens clearly see stronger European coordination and joint action as part of the solution for the European Union to emerge from the doldrums and return to strong economic growth and higher employment. It is with this spirit that we are starting the European Semester today," said Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship.
