Remarks by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton after meeting Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg
First of all, it is a great delight to have Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg with us today. We've had a brief meeting and we'll be meeting again later. Our purpose was to exchange notes on the situation in our neighbourhood, to emphasise the importance in the role of Member States in supporting the neighbourhood policy that we have as we look to its future, and to reflect on the need to offer our support to the people of Egypt, Tunisia and, of course, our thoughts are especially with the people of Libya.
I've been worried again today by the reports of more violence in Libya, I join with those who tell Colonel Gaddafi to stand aside and it's very important that he listens to the people. But as we look to the support we can offer the people of this region, I am absolutely determined that the European Union should play its part and that we should ensure that we are both confident in what we offer and working collaboratively with our Member States and with our international partners to achieve democracy across the region.
