Message of condolence from President Barroso to Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, on the passing away of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke
"It was with deep sorrow that I learned about the death of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. Europe owes Mr Holbrooke a genuine debt of gratitude for his part in brokering the Dayton peace accord, which brought to a halt the most intractable conflict in Europe since the end of World War II. I am determined to do everything in my power to preserve this legacy of peace.
I am also appreciative of Ambassador Holbrooke's efforts, as your Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, to promote and consolidate peace and stability in that war torn region.
His example is an inspiration to all those who must now take forward that work in his absence.
Please convey my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. On behalf of the European Commission, and Ambassador Holbrooke's many friends in Europe, I also send my condolences to the American people for this sad loss."
