Letter of congratulation by President Barroso to the German President Christian Wulff
"Dear President Wulff,
On behalf of the European Commission I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to you on your election to the office of President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Throughout your political career, you have emphasised the opportunities of a united Europe for its citizens. And as Minister President of Lower Saxony, you have always understood state politics in the context of federal and European policy and have acted accordingly. In addition, you have created strong state-level structures to communicate Europe effectively. In my view, your commitment here as been exemplary.
Your election comes at a time of great global challenges. In particular, we need a strong Europe to exit successfully from an international financial and economic crisis and to tackle climate change. I am convinced that Germany will continue to play its central role in the process of European integration, and that you will continue to contribute to this in your new position.
I look forward to continuing our good cooperation on a new level and wish you much success, energy and good fortune for the challenges ahead of you during your tenure."
