President Barroso congratulates the new Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr Naoto Kan, on his appointment

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, has today sent the following message of congratulations to the newly appointed Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr Naoto Kan:

"Let me express my warmest congratulations on your appointment as the new Prime Minister of Japan. I wish you every success in implementing the ambitious programme of reform of the Democratic Party of Japan.

I am looking forward to working closely with you on further strengthening political and economic relations between Japan and the European Union, including exchanging experience on regional integration in view of your goal of promoting an East Asia Community.

As global partners who share the same basic values and world views, Japan and the European Union have a lot to do together on key topics on the international agenda such as fighting climate change, promoting global economic governance and peace building.

I hope to meet you in Toronto at the end of the month and later this year at the ASEM Summit in Brussels. I consider it important that Japan and the European Union should make progress this year in implementing the conclusions of the last Japan-EU Summit, which took place on 28 April 2010 in Tokyo."
