The Commission is today announcing the founding members of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (see IP/05/956 ). This background note gives biographical information, where available, about the 22 men and women appointed.
Dr. Claudio BORDIGNON (IT)
Current position: Scientific Director and Professor of Hematology at the San Raffaele Institute
Claudio Bordignon graduated in Medicine from the University of Milan, where he specialized in Internal Medicine and in Hematology. He completed his training in transplantation immunology at the SUNY, Buffalo, and in bone marrow transplantation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he began his research in gene therapy of cancer and hereditary diseases. In the ‘90s he returned to Milan at San Raffaele where he directed the Bone Marrow Transplantation Program, and founded and led the group that performed the first worldwide experience of gene therapy in hematopoietic stem cells for hereditary diseases. In 2002 this work led to the publication of the first successful gene therapy treatment of adenosine deaminase-deficient SCID. He expanded this experience to stem cell gene therapy of other genetic diseases and AIDS, and to immuno-gene therapy of cancer. Dr. Bordignon has been President of the European Society of Genetic Therapy and Member of major Scientific Committees. Since 1998, he has been Scientific Director and Professor of Hematology at the San Raffaele Institute. He is also Founder and President of MolMed, a biotech company dedicated to the development of new anti-cancer molecular treatments. He received numerous scientific awards and prices from scientific societies including the Italian Association for Cancer Research, the Leukemia Society of America, the European Society for Gene Therapy, the Italian League Against Tumors. In 2002 he was awarded the Invernizzi Price for Medicine, the most important medical award in Italy.
Prof. Manuel CASTELLS (ES)
Current position: Research Professor of Information Society at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Barcelona and Professor Emeritus of Sociology and of Planning, University of California, Berkeley
Manuel Castells is as well the holder of the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and the Marvin and Joanne Grossman Distinguished Visiting Professor of Technology and Society at the Massachussets Institute of Technology. Prior to his appointment to Berkeley in 1979, he was professor of sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes es Sciences Sociales in Paris, and professor of sociology at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. He is a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economic Sciences. He has received honorary doctorates from 13 universities.He has published 23 books and over 100 academic articles, including the trilogy "The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture" (Blackwell, 1996-1998) translated in 20 languages. His research focuses on the social and economic dimensions of information and communication technologies. He has also worked on urban and regional development, and on the relationship between globalization and cultural identity.
Prof. Dr. Paul J. CRUTZEN (NL)
Current position: Emeritus Director of the Atmospheric Chemistry Division of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, and Professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California at San Diego.
Born in Amsterdam in 1933, Paul J. Crutzen was trained as a civil engineer and worked with the Bridge Construction Bureau of the City of Amsterdam. In 1959 he joined Stockholm University to study mathematics, mathematical statistics, meteorology and atmospheric chemistry. His research has been especially concerned with the natural and anthropogenically disturbed photochemistry of ozone in the stratosphere and troposphere. Thereby he also identified biomass burning, especially in the tropics, as an important source of widespread air pollution, especially during the dry season, with potential impacts on Earth climate. He served as Director of Research at the National Center of Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, 1977-1980, and thereafter until his retirement in 2000, at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz. He also conducts research at the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Crutzen received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1995 for his research on atmospheric ozone.
Professor Mathias DEWATRIPONT (BE)
Current position: Professor of Economics, Université Libre de Bruxelles, European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics - ECARES
Born in 1959, Mathias Dewatripont is Professor of Economics at ECARES (European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics), Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has been part-time Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1998.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, 1986. His general research area is the economic theory of contracts and incentives, with applications to banking and corporate finance, transition economics, industrial economics and the theory of organizations. He has published widely in these areas in international journals and is the recent co-author (with Patrick Bolton) of the graduate textbook Contract Theory (MIT Press, 2005).
Fellow of the Econometric Society (the leading world association of academic economists) since 1993, he was Member of its Council (1999-2002) and one of the three Programme co-chairs of its 2000 World Congress. In 2003, he received the Jahnsson Medal, awarded every two years by the Jahnsson Foundation and the European Economic Association to one or two European-based academic economists under the age of 45. This year, he is the President of the European Economic Association, the leading association of academic economists in Europe.
Since 1998, he has been Research Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a network of around 700 academic economists based in Europe and North America. Since 2001, he has been a Member of European Commission Presidents R. Prodi and J.M. Barroso’s Group of Economic Policy Analysis.

Professor Pavel EXNER (CZ)

Born 1946 in Prague, Prof. Pavel Exner graduated in 1969 from the Charles University. From 1978 to 1990 he worked in Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, where he got his PhD and DSc degrees. Presently a head of a mathematical-physics group in Czech Academy of Sciences and a professor of theoretical physics at the Charles University. Interested in mathematical methods related to quantum systems, in particular, quantum waveguides and graphs, unstable systems, and solvable models. Author of three books and more than 150 research papers, cofounder of the QMath conference series. Awarded JINR prize in theoretical physics and Czech Physical Society medal. At present he serves as a vicepresident of the European Mathematical Society and secretary of the IUPAP commission for mathematical physics.
Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim FREUND (DE)

Hans-Joachim Freund (born 1951) studied physics and chemistry at the University of Cologne and received his PhD in 1978 with a thesis on quantum chemical calculations and spectroscopic studies on transition metal carbonyl compounds in comparison with carbon monoxide adsorbates. Between 1979 and 1981 he worked in the Physics Department at the University of Pennsylvania as a postdoctoral fellow on synchrotron studies of the electronic structure of adsorbates. After having returned to Cologne he finished his habilitation in 1983 and accepted in the same year a position as associated professor at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg. In 1987 he moved to a position as full professor for physical chemistry at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In 1995 he accepted a position as scientific member and director at the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin where he is head of the Department of Chemical Physics. He serves as Adjunct Professor of the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, and of the Freie Universität, Technische Universität, and Humboldt Universität in Berlin. In 1995 he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award of the German Science Foundation (DFG) and since 1996 he is an ordinary member of the Chemical Sciences Section of the Academia Europea as well as of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften since 1998. He is Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2001. He is member of several scientific societies, member of several advisory boards of scientific journals and has published more than 400 scientific papers in the field of physical chemistry at surfaces and model catalysts.
Prof. Wendy HALL (UK)
Current position: Head of School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton
Wendy Hall is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK and is currently Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). She was the founding Head of the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia (IAM) Research Group in ECS. She has published over 300 papers in areas such as hypermedia, multimedia, digital libraries, multi-agent systems and knowledge technologies. She is currently senior Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Immediate Past President of the British Computer Society, a member of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, a member of the ACM Council, a member of IW3C2, a member of the Executive Committee of UKCRC and a non-executive Director of several companies and charitable trusts. She was awarded a CBE in 2000, and is a Fellow of the BCS, the IEE, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the City and Guilds of London Institute. Professor Carl-Henrik HELDIN (SE)
Current position: Director and Professor in Molecular Cell Biology, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
C.-H. Heldin is since 1986 the Branch Director of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Uppsala, Sweden, and since 1992 also professor in Molecular Cell Biology at Uppsala University. He was born in 1952, and obtained a PhD degree in Medical and Physiological Chemistry in 1980 at the University of Uppsala, where he continued to work until 1985 using a position sponsored by the Swedish Cancer Society.
The research interest of C.-H. Heldin is related to the mechanisms of signal transduction by growth regulatory factors, as well as their normal function and role in disease. In particular, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), a major mitogen for connective tissue cells, and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), which inhibits the growth of most cell types, are studied. An important goal is to explore the possible clinical utility of signal transduction antagonists.
C.-H. Heldin is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Academia Europea. He serves or has served on the Scientific Advisory Boards for several companies and academic institutions, including the German Cancer Center, Heidelberg, Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Martinsried, and European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg. C.-H Heldin is currently on the Board for the Swedish Research Councils, and serves as Senior Editor for Cancer Research and Associate Editor for Molecular Biology of the Cell, Genes to Cells and Growth Factors.
C.-H. Heldin has received several scientific awards, including Prix Antoine Lacassagne (1989), K. Fernströms Large Medical Prize (1993) and the Pezcoller-American Association for Cancer Research Award (2002).
Prof. Dr. Fotis C. KAFATOS (EL)
Current position: Chair Insect Immunogenetics at Imperial College
Fotis C. Kafatos was born in Crete, Greece, where he received his primary and secondary education. He graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree with high honours and went on to earn a masters and doctorate (1965) in biology from Harvard, where he became the youngest full Professor in 1969, serving until 1994. In parallel, he was Adjunct Professor of Biology at the University of Athens from 1972 to 1982, Founder and Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the Research Centre of Crete from 1982 to 1993, and since 1982 Professor of Biology at the University of Crete (currently on leave). He served two successful terms (1993-2005) as Director-General of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the top leading molecular biology laboratory in Europe promoting new approaches to Biology and the development of research infrastructures in Europe, in the 1960’s Kafatos was one of the scientists who introduced molecular biology to the study of development. He also helped develop fundamental techniques such as cDNA synthesis, cloning and sequencing (for beta globin) and the dot-blot. He pioneered the analysis of gene families in development and evolution (chorion gene families). He helped launch the Drosophila and Anopheles genome projects, and has made important contributions to comparative and functional genomics. His current scientific work is on malaria research with emphasis on mosquito genomics and immunity of Anopheles to the parasite. He is active in efforts to promote research and scientific education in the developing world. His professional activities include service on the advisory boards and panels of many international scientific centres and organisations. He is the recipient of numerous honours including three honorary doctorates. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Europea and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. He is also a Foreign Member of the French Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of London.
Prof. Dr. Michal KLEIBER (PL)
Current position: Head, Dept. of Computational Science & Engineering, Polish Academy of Sciences
Professor Michał Kleiber is the head of the Computational Science Department at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences and lectures at he Mathematics and Information Science Department of the Warsaw University of Technology. His educational background is thermo-mechanics (M.Sc. in engineering from the Warsaw University of Technology) and applied math and information science (M.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Warsaw). His has done research on modeling and large scale computer simulations in solid and fluid thermo-mechanics, material science, bioengineering and system reliability as well as on numerical methods and software engineering. He has published over 200 articles in leading international journals and authored several books. He spent over 10 years teaching and doing research at different universities in Stuttgart, Bochum and Darmstadt in Germany, Berkeley, CA in the USA and Tokyo in Japan. He has also given lecture courses at many other universities in the USA, Europe, Africa and Asia. Professor Kleiber is an elected member of the Academies of Sciences in Poland and Austria, and has honorary doctor degrees from a number of universities in Poland, Germany and Belgium. He is a member of editorial boards of 15 leading research journals with world-wide distribution and the editor-in-chief of two of them. In 2001 he received the Foundation for Polish Science Award which is the most prestigious award for research achievements in Poland.
Recently, Professor Kleiber has been on leave of absence from his academic duties as he serves as the Minister of Science and Information Society Technologies in the Polish government – his term expires in September 2005.

Prof. Maria Teresa LAGO (PT)

Maria Teresa Lago was born in Lisboa (1947), lived in Angola (1948–65). PhD (1979) (Astronomy) at the Sussex University, UK.
Full Professor at the School of Sciences and Head of the Centre for Astrophysics, University of Porto.
Most relevant activities include: Education in Astronomy (graduate and post-graduate), promotion of science and scientific culture and research in Astrophysics - multi-wavelength observations and modelling of young stars in the context of stellar evolution.
Presently is a member of the Council of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and coordinates the Scientific Council for “Earth & Space Sciences” of the National Research Council.
In the past has been involved in various EC Panels (DG XII) and Science Advisory Committees and Boards namely, Space Science Advisory Committee (ESA), School of Cosmic Physics (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies), Astronomy & Space Science (Academy of Finland).

Dr. Oscar MARIN PARRA (ES)

Oscar Marín was born in Madrid (Spain) in 1971. He graduated in Biologic Sciences from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) in 1993, where he also obtained his Doctoral Degree in 1997 (Extraordinary award and European mention). As a graduate student, he studied different aspects of the organization of the amphibian forebrain from a comparative perspective, under the supervision of Agustín González (UCM) and Wilhelmus J. A. J. Smeets (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam). After his Thesis defense, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Angela Nieto at the Instituto Cajal (Madrid), where he became interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling forebrain development. At the end of 1998, he joined to the University of California in San Francisco. During his stay in the United States, he worked together with two of the principal leaders in the field of the developmental neurobiology, John L. R. Rubenstein and Marc Tessier-Lavigne. In 2003, Oscar returned to Spain after being appointed as a Group leader of the Spanish Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC). His laboratory at the Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante (CSIC & Universidad Miguel Hernández) focuses in understanding the mechanisms controlling cell migration in the developing brain. Oscar Marín is an EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) Young Investigator (2003), a NARSAD (National Alliance for research in Schizophrenia and Depression) Young Investigator (2004) and a EURYI (European Young Investigator Award) Awardee (2004).
Professor Lord MAY of Oxford OM AC Kt PRS (UK)

Robert McCredie, Lord May of Oxford, OM AC Kt, is President of The Royal Society (2000-2005) and holds a Professorship jointly at the Oxford University and Imperial College, London and is a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. He was Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government and Head of the UK Office of Science and Technology, 1995-2000. He is also, amongst others things, a Trustee of the Nuffield Foundation and of the Cambridge University Gates Trust, and until recently Chaired the Trustees of the Natural History Museum. His career includes a Personal Chair in Physics at Sydney University aged 33, Class of 1877 Professor of Zoology and Chairman of the Research Board at Princeton, and in 1988 a move to Britain and Oxford as Royal Society Research Professor. Particular interests include how populations are structured and respond to change, particularly with respect to infectious diseases and biodiversity.
He was awarded a Knighthood in 1996, and appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1998, both for “Services to Science”. In 2001 he was one of the first 15 Life Peers created by the “House of Lords Appointments Commission”, which was established as an independent mechanism for appointing non-party-political Peers following the removal of the voting rights of hereditary Peers. In 2002, The Queen appointed him to the Order of Merit (the fifth Australian in its 100-year history). His many honours include: the Royal Swedish Academy’s Crafoord Prize (bioscience and ecology’s equivalent of a Nobel Prize); the Swiss-Italian Balzan Prize (for “seminal contributions to [understanding] biodiversity”); and the Japanese Blue Planet Prize (“for developing fundamental tools for ecological conservation planning”). He is a Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Sciences, and an Overseas Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences.
Professor Dr. Helga NOWOTNY, Ph.D. (AT)
Current position: Chair of EURAB, Fellow at the Wissenschaftszentrum Wien
Helga Nowotny is Professor em. of Social Studies of Science at ETH Zurich, and former Director of its Collegium Helveticum. Currently she is Chair of EURAB, the European Research Advisory Board of the European Commission.
She has a doctorate in law from the University of Vienna and a Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University, New York. She has held teaching and research positions at the University of Vienna, Cambridge, Bielefeld, Berlin and at the Ecoles des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. She has been a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and a Permanent Fellow at Collegium Budapest/Institute for Advanced Study. She is the recipient of the John Desmond Bernal Prize 2003 and the Arthur Burckhardt-Preis 2002.
Among her many publications in social studies of science and technology are “The New Production of Knowledge” (co-authored) and its sequel “Re-thinking Science. Knowledge and the Public in an Age of Uncertainty” (with P. Scott, M. Gibbons).In 2005 “Unersättliche Neugier: Innovation in einer fragilen Zukunft“, “The Public Nature of Science under Assault: Politics, Markets, Science and the Law” (co-authored) and “Cultures of Technology and the Quest for Innovation” (editor) are being published.
Professor Christiane NÜSSLEIN-VOLHARD (DE)

Postdoc in the laboratories of Walter Gehring, Basel, and Klaus Sander, Freiburg. Group leader at the EMBL, Heidelberg (1978-1981) and the FML of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Tübingen ((198- 1984) Since 1985 Direktor at the Max-Planck-institute of Developmental Biology, Tübingen. Her research interests concern the molecular and genetic analysis of embryonic development. The research presently focuses on the establishment of cell polarity in Drosophila, and organ formation, growth and cell migration in the zebrafish, a new vertebrate model organism.
For the discovery of genes that control development in animals and humans , and the demonstration of morphogen gradients in the fly embryo she has received a number of awards and honors, among others the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award, New York, the Prix Louis Jeantet de Medicine, Geneva, Switzerland, the Ernst Schering Price, Berlin, and teh Nobel Price for Medicine or Physiology in 1995. She is recipient of honorary degrees of the Universities Yale, Harverd, Princeton in USA, Utrecht (the Netherlands) , UC London, University of Oxford and Sheffield, UK, Freiburg and Munich (Germany). She is foreign member of the Royal Society, London, UK, and the National Academy, Wash. US, and member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), the Leopoldina, Halle, the Berlin/Brandenburg Academy, and the Order Pour Le Mérite, Berlin. She is secretary general of EMBO and member of the senat of the Max-Planck-Society and the National Ethics Council of Germany.
Dr. Leena PELTONEN-PALOTIE (FI)
Professor of Medical Genetics and Molecular Medicine in the University of Helsinki and National Public Health Institute
Leena Peltonen is Professor of Medical Genetics and Molecular Medicine in the University of Helsinki and National Public Health Institute, Finland and a Professor of the Academy of Finland and Director of the Center of Excellence of the Academy. With over 400 publications, Dr. Peltonen is among leading molecular geneticists world-wide. She is one of the pioneers in the use of genetically isolated populations in the genetics-based identification of disease genes. She has also been pivotal in numerous international research efforts and science organizations. She was the founding Chair of the Department of Human Genetics at UCLA in 1998-2002, is currently president of Human Genome Organization and has served as member of UNESCO Bioethics Committee and Board of Directors of the American Society of Human Genetics. She leads the Nordic Center of Excellence of Disease Genetics and a large European Community research program, GENOMEUTWIN (www.genomeutwin.org.) aiming at characterization of genetic and life style risks of common diseases. Dr. Peltonen has received several international science awards e.g. Scandinavian Anders Jahre Prize, European Mauro Baschirotto Prize, Antoine Marfan Award (USA) and Margaret Pittman Award of NIH. She is an Honorary Doctor of the University of Uppsala, Sweden and University of Joensuu, Finland.
Prof. Alain PEYRAUBE (FR)

Alain Peyraube is currently Directeur de Recherche at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, Paris, France) and Professor of Chinese Linguistics at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He received his Ph.D. from Paris 8 University in 1976 and his Doctorat d’Etat from Paris 7 University in 1984.
He has been Director from 1984 to 1998 of the Institute of East Asian Linguistics (CNRS and EHESS). He served as President of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics and as President of the European Association of Chinese Studies.
Alain Peyraube has been Visiting Professor and Visiting Scholar at Cornell University (Hu Shih Chair), at the University of California at Santa Barbara, at the Hong Kong Baptist University, at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, at the Academia Sinica of Taiwan, at La Trobe University in Australia.
He is corresponding member of the Academia Sinica of Taiwan and Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
A specialist in Chinese historical syntax and linguistic typology, A. Peyraube has authored five books and more than a hundred of articles on Chinese studies and mainly on Chinese linguistics. One of his recent publications is the chapter on Ancient Chinese in the Encyclopaedia of the World’s Ancient Languages (Cambridge University Press).

Professor Salvatore SETTIS (IT)

Salvatore Settis is currently Director of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, where he is also Professor of the History of Classical Art and Archaeology. He has been Director of the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities in Los Angeles, Ca., from 1994 through 1999.
Visiting Professor in several universities (among others, École Pratique des Hautes Études, 4ème Sect., Paris; École Pratique des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris; Collège de France; University of Hamburg; Johns Hopkins, Baltimore ML; Harvard), he also delivered the Isaiah Berlin Lectures in Oxford and the Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery, Washington DC. He is a member of several academies, including the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Rome, the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin, the Bayerische Akademie, Munich, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Académie Royale de Belgique). Member of several Committees, including the International Committee for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the advisory boards of the Enciclopedia Italiana, Rome, the Harvard Center for Renaissance Studies, Florence, the Courtauld Institute, London, and the Bibliotheca Hertziana, Rome.

Professor Dr. med.Rolf ZINKERNAGEL (CH)
Current position: Institute of Experimental Immunology, University Hospital Zürich
Born and raised in Basle, Rolf Zinkernagel went through Medical School of the University of Basle, got his MD degree in 1968 and wanted to become a surgeon. After about 1 ½ years he decided to look into immunological research problems, went through the Postgraduate Course in Experimental Medicine at the University of Zurich and spent 2 ½ years in the Institute of Biochemistry of Lausanne working on immunity against infections. From 1973-1975 he was a postdoc and PhD student at the Australian national University John Curtin School of Medical Research in Canberra, Australia, where Peter Doherty and he made seminal observations on how cytotoxic T cells recognize virus infected cells in an infected host. Subsequently at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla from 1975 to 1979, he studied T cell maturation and development of the T cell repertoire as it depends on the transplantation antigen expression in the thymus. In 1980 he joined the Univeristy of Zurich, Department of Pathology as associate professor where, together with Hans Hengartner, he has been studying immune protection and immunopathology caused by virus infections.
Besides the interests in solving uncertainties and discrepancies in Immunology, Rolf Zinkernagel tries to further biomedical research and its application in Zurich, in Switzerland and Europe. He has supported gene technology and animal experimentation in various votations in Switzerland and Europe, has been member of the Swiss Science Council and has helped to popularize science in tabloid newspapers.
