Catherine Ashton appoints new Head of EU Delegation to the United States

Brussels, 5 May 2014 – Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission, announced today the appointment of David O'Sullivan as Head of the European Union's Delegation to the United States of America.

David O'Sullivan has been the Chief Operating Officer of the European External Actions Service since its creation. Prior to this he has had a long and distinguished career in the European Commission, holding a number of senior positions, including that of Secretary General and Director-General for TRADE.

High Representative Catherine Ashton said: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of David O'Sullivan to this key job in the European External Action Service. David's well-known talent, energy and expertise continue to be significant assets for the EU's external action and make him the ideal candidate to take forward the European Union's work in Washington D.C.

I would also like to pay special tribute to João Vale de Almeida for his excellent and tireless work as head of our Delegation to the US over the past four years. As he completes his term in Washington in the autumn, I look forward to continue working with him as he takes up a senior post at the European External Action Service in Brussels."
