High Representative Catherine Ashton appoints new Head of EU Delegation to Myanmar/Burma
Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission, announced today the appointment Roland Kobia as Head of the EU Delegation to Myanmar/Burma. Currently Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Mr Kobia has also served in the former European Commission Delegations to Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The decision to open an EU Delegation in Yangon was taken in January 2013, reflecting the departure from authoritarian rule taken by Myanmar/Burma since early 2011, along with the country's commitment to reforms and the significant steps taken to establish a more open society.
High Representative Catherine Ashton said: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of Roland Kobia to head up the EU's Delegation in Myanmar/Burma. His talent and expertise are significant assets for the EU's external action and I look forward to working with him in his new role".
The appointment is part of the 2013 rotation exercise within the European External Action Service (EEAS).
NB: To complete appointments, an accreditation request for a new Head of Delegation is sent to the host country. The selected candidate may take up duty only once accreditation of the host country has been granted and a number of administrative formalities have been completed.
