First trilogue on MFF 2014-2020: "Final agreement reachable by end of June"

Today's first trilogue (the European Parliament, Council, the European Commission) on the 2014-2020 multiannual financial framework ended in full agreement on various issues.

"The Council and the Parliament agreed on both the scope and calendar of the negotiations; this shows the will from both sides to reach a swift agreement on the next financial period, which is what Europe’s regions, businesses, scientists, NGOs and students call for. Therefore our common target to complete the negotiations by the end of the Irish presidency is definitely reachable", stated EU Commissioner for financial programming and budget Janusz Lewandowski.

"Will there be difficult points on the table?", he added. "There is no doubt about it; what precise sort of flexibility of the EU budget do we want, to name but one. However, this is normal. The only purpose of negotiations is precisely to find acceptable compromises, and I will work flat out to find them".

Following up on last week's agreement between the Irish Presidency, the President of the European Parliament and the President of the European Commission, delegates at today's trilogue agreed that the negotiations will focus mainly on future flexibility of the EU budget, a revision clause, the future of the EU budget's own resources and the unity of the EU budget.

The next trilogue is scheduled for 28 May.
