REMINDER - EU-Central Asia Ministerial in Brussels today
The EU-Central Asia Ministerial meeting taking place today is the first to be held in Brussels. It is the tenth Ministerial since the Central Asia Strategy was adopted by the European Council in 2007. All Central Asian countries have hosted this Ministerial at least once.
On behalf of High Representative/Vice President (HR/VP) Catherine Ashton, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius is, with European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs, hosting this year's meeting. The Ministerial is attended by the Foreign Ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan as well as senior officials of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
During the plenary session, key initiatives and future perspectives of EU-Central Asia cooperation are being discussed as well security issues and regional cooperation. Both Minister Linkevičius and Commissioner Piebalgs will also host a working lunch and hold bilateral talks with the Central Asian partners thereafter.
During these meetings with each of the country's representatives, Commissioner Piebalgs will discuss and agree on the main areas of future development cooperation, and will take the opportunity to set out future financial commitments.
Commissioner Piebalgs and Minister Linkevičius will hold a press point following the plenary session at 12:30 at VIP corner at Berlaymont.
