Commissioner Oettinger welcomes TANAP gas pipeline agreements

EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger welcomed today's signature of the Inter Government Agreement and the Host Government Agreement to implement the Trans-Anatolia Gas Pipeline (TANAP):

"Europe is now a step closer to its aim to get gas directly from Azerbaijan and the other countries in the Caspian region."

Turkey and Azerbaijan today communicated the signature of the Inter Government Agreement and the Host Government Agreement. With these two agreements, the governments of these two countries give the project company the legal authority to build the pipeline. The aim is to implement the pipeline by no later than 2018.

TANAP will take gas from the Eastern Turkish border to the Western Turkish border, providing for stable transit across the whole country. The project will link to the expanded Southern Caucasus pipeline starting in Azerbaijan and continuing in Georgia and to a variety of proposed pipelines in the European Union. For the first time, a direct link from the European Union to the Caspian Sea will be established.

The Southern Gas Corridor, bringing gas from the Caspian and Middle East to the European Union, needs to build a new pipeline across Turkey, as there are existing capacity constraints in Central Anatolia. A new pipeline will contribute to both Turkey's and the EU's security of supply.

Background:

According to official sources, three remaining projects are in competition to bring the gas from the Turkish-EU border deeper into the European Union: Nabucco West, the South East Europe Pipeline (SEEP) and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). Until the end of June 2012, a preselection of the two pipeline projects aiming to bring gas to Northern Europe - Nabucco West and SEEP - will take place. A final decision on the whole route will be taken in June 2013, according to Azerbaijani official sources.

Nabucco West is a pipeline project to bring gas from the Western Turkish border to Baumgarten (Vienna, Austria).

SEEP is a pipeline project to bring gas from the Western Turkish border to Hungary.

TAP is a pipeline project to bring gas from Greece to Italy.
