European Commission appoints new Head of Representation in Brussels
Brussels, 1 March 2012 – Today, Mr. Joseph Jamar takes office as Head of Representation in Brussels.
Mr. Jamar is currently the Head of the Commission Representation Office in the Netherlands. His entire professional career has focused on communication and in particular on ways to strengthen communication with citizens. He launched several innovative projects such as the European SME Week, the Netd@ys, the Youth on the Move campaign and the European Job Day. He was also responsible for two European Years: Lifelong Learning in 1996 and Workers' Mobility in 2006.
Since joining the European Commission in 1994 he has worked successively in the Directorates General responsible for Education and Culture, Press and Information, Research and, finally, from 2005 to 2011, Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.
Before joining the European Commission, Mr. Jamar read legal and international relations studies at the University of Louvain, the College of Europe in Bruges and the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. He then spent 10 years at the College of Europe as an assistant to the Rector and Director of studies.
In 1989, he joined Coopers & Lybrand (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers), where he spent five years on the management of the Euro Info Centre network, a tool aimed at facilitating the participation of small and medium-sized businesses in EU programmes.
Mr. Jamar 's broad experience will enable the Commission Representation in Brussels to play a key role in communicating with citizens and the media, as well as enhancing relations between the European Commission and national and local authorities and stakeholders.
The Commission has representations in all 27 EU Member States. They inform the media and public about EU policies and report to the Commission on significant developments in the country.
