EIT Entrepreneurship Awards announced
Brussels, 21 February 2012 - The first Entrepreneurship Awards for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) were announced at the Royal Academy of Science in Brussels this evening in the presence of Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. The three overall winners were chosen from among nine start-up companies created as part of the EIT's knowledge and innovation communities (KICs) in the areas of climate change, sustainable energy and ICT. The winners are:
Naked Eergy (United Kingdom): Design and innovation company developing solar technology that generates electricity and heat.
Naked Energy has developed a hybrid product that combines photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies, generating both hot water and electricity and allowing the customer to get more useable energy per square metre than standard technology. The company is linked to Climate-KIC through its association with Imperial College London.. NE is keen to pursue commercial opportunities with relevant core partners.
2. EIT ICT LABS
Trifense (Germany): specialises in protecting computer networks against cyber threats.
The company was founded as a result of two successful research projects that were funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research. The goal: Timely translation of research results into commercial network security products. Inspiration for students: Employment opportunities for those interested in applied research in an interesting and challenging field within the emerging ICT security domain.
3. KIC InnoEnergy
Noem (Spain): construction using sustainable wooden materials.
A venture to build the ideal 21st century home: mobile, flexible, and sustainable. The aim is a No Emission construction.
A press corner willl take place at 19:00 with Commissioner Vassiliou, Alexander von Gabain, chair of the EIT Governing Board, and Benoît Cerexhe, Minister, Brussels Region at the Royal Academy of Science (1, Rue Ducale, Brussels)
