European Commission appoints new Head of Representation in Estonia
Brussels, 26 August 2011 – Mr. Hannes Rumm will take office as Head of the Representation in Estonia on 1 September 2011.
Until recently, Mr. Rumm was a member of the Estonian Parliament having previously worked in international business and journalism. In 1994 he graduated in journalism at the Faculty of Philosophy at Tartu University.
He held several media positions before being appointed as Head of the EU Information Secretariat at the State Chancellery of the Republic of Estonia in 2001. In 2004 he returned to the private sector, where he held the position as Managing Director of the company Media Focus. From 2007-2011 he was a Member of the Estonian Parliament for the Social Democratic Party, where he contributed to the work of the Constitutional Committee and the State Budget Control Select Committee.
From 2009-2011 he started working as an international senior expert, advising the government of Armenia on how to develop a communication strategy, introducing the EU partnership policy and assisted in establishing a network of EU Information Centres across the country. He was twice Member of the City Council of Tallinn.
Mr. Rumm's broad experience will help the Representation in Estonia to play a key role in communicating with Estonian citizens and the media, as well as boosting relations between the European Commission and national and local authorities as well as other stakeholders.
The Commission has Representations in all EU Member States. They represent the Commission in the Member States, inform the media and public about its policies and report to the Commission on significant developments in the country.
