European Union allocates €12 million to support Joint Cooperation Initiative in Crimea

Today the European Commission is set to award €12 million in support of the Government of Ukraine in order to pursue further its regional development efforts, particularly in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol.  The Joint Cooperation Initiative in Crimea (JCIC) is aimed at supporting the social and economic development of the Crimea with a specific focus on tourism, building social infrastructure and promoting Foreign Direct Investment. It will help to meet essential community needs by generating new opportunities for economic development.

Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle, will sign the financing agreement for JCIC today with Vasiliy Dzharty, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, during Mr Dzharty’s official visit to Brussels.

Commissioner Štefan Füle said: "Regional development is extremely important in the Eastern Partnership in general and in Ukraine in particular. It is a key element in the process of political association and economic integration which we are building together with Ukraine. I am also convinced that this initiative will strongly contribute to reducing the disparity and development gap between Crimea and other regions of the country."

This initiative represents a demand-driven, coordinated approach to sustainable regional development based on cooperation together with 14 EU Member States.

Since 2008, the TACIS Project "Support to Sustainable Regional Development in Ukraine" has supported the Ministry of Regional Development in capacity development, notably in developing the new regional policy in Ukraine as well as a draft “Law on Fundamentals of Regional Policy of Ukraine” that proposed a new system for regional development encompassing the whole regional development cycle based on guidelines of EU policies related to regional development.
