Commissioner Štefan Füle visits Jordan

Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, visited Jordan on 1st and 2nd May, where he met with the country's highest authorities, including HM King Abdullah II, Mr. Al Masri, President of the Senate, Mr. Nasser Judeh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jafar Hassan, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation and Mr. Khaled Toukan, Minister of Energy and other senior officials. During his visit, he had a series of meetings with a broad range of Jordanian civil society organisations and representatives.

This visit allowed the parties to exchange views on the latest developments in regional and international matters, to discuss the state of play of bilateral relations, to review the progress made by Jordan in moving forward on political and economic reforms and to present the key objectives of the European Neighbourhood Policy Review, currently under preparation.

The Jordanian authorities underlined their efforts to develop a comprehensive approach and tackle political, economic and social challenges. HM King Abdullah II emphasized the on-going work of the National Dialogue Committee and the newly established Royal Committee, as evidence of the seriousness of Jordan's commitment to progressing on the path of democratic reforms.

"I commend the efforts made so far by the country and stress the willingness of the EU to continue supporting Jordan in addressing the current economic and financial challenges the country is facing. Referring to the work of both the National Dialogue and Royal Committees, I emphasize the need for concrete implementation of reforms to the benefit of the Jordanian citizens. Let me reiterate the principle of "more EU support for more reforms''." said Commissioner Stefan Füle in Amman on 2nd May.

The meeting with the Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh focused on the review of the ambitious Action Plan reflecting both the enhanced status of EU-Jordan relations and the important role Jordan plays in the region.

Last but not least, upon invitation of Commissioner Štefan Füle, Mr. Khaled Toukan agreed to send a delegation of senior officials to Brussels in order to exchange information on energy supply security.
