Commissioner Piebalgs on official visit to Burkina Faso

Brussels, 23 November 2011 - European Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, will go to Burkina Faso for a two-day visit. He will meet President Blaise Compaoré whose role in mediating several African crises is widely acknowledged.

The main theme of this visit is the wish to meet local people and see projects on the ground.

Prior to his arrival in Burkina Faso, the Commissioner said: “Burkina Faso is a valued partner for the European Union in the region and we welcome the efforts made by its government in fighting poverty and bringing peace to the sub-region. We have raised our allocation for Burkina Faso by €105 million inter alia to support the new strategy of accelerated growth and sustainable development. Good governance also constitutes an essential element of development: next year’s parliamentary and municipal elections will be key to the country’s future. "

The talks between Commissioner Piebalgs and President Compaoré will therefore focus on regional security, good governance and the challenges of entrenching democracy, just a few months after the social and political crisis which shook the country. The Commissioner will also explain the priorities of the new European development policy, which emphasises: support for inclusive and sustainable development, the promotion of human rights and good governance, through particular support for agriculture, access to energy and partnerships with the private sector.

In this respect, the Commissioner will visit several projects which entirely correspond to the new European development policy.

  • A project for a 22-megawatt photovoltaic solar power plant in the suburbs of Ouagadougou, to be built for the national electricity utility.

  • A health centre to illustrate the attainment of the MDGs through budgetary support.

  • An agricultural and food security project funded by the EU’s Food Facility and implemented by the FAO.

  • An upgrading and plant health laboratory to encourage trade in fruit and vegetables for regional and international markets.

He will take stock of regional integration issues to which Burkina Faso is particularly committed with leading representatives of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA).
