EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle, to visit Lebanon (27-28 October)

Brussels, 26 October 2011 - The European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle, will visit Lebanon on 27 and 28 October. It will be his first visit in the country and his discussions with Lebanese partners will focus on strengthening the relations between the European Union and Lebanon as well as supporting the reform process there through the revised European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).

"Lebanon is a crucial partner and neighbour for the European Union. Strengthening our partnership would greatly benefit both our societies and the stability of the region as a whole" Mr Füle said before the visit. "Of course, the increased EU support will be linked to Lebanon's commitment to reforms. The more and faster Lebanon progresses in its internal reforms, the more support it will get from the EU," Mr Füle added recalling the new approach adopted in the framework of the reviewed ENP. He also repeated the EU´s expectation that Lebanon would live up to its international obligations.

In Beirut Commissioner Füle will meet with the President of the Republic Michel Sleiman, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nagib Mikati, Minister of Foreign Affairs Adnan Mansour and other members of the government as well as representatives of the civil society.

During his meetings with the Lebanese officials, Commissioner Füle will seek to push forward the implementation of reforms jointly agreed under the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) Action Plan.
