January 2011: Business Climate Indicator further improves in the euro area
Commission Européenne - IP/11/101 27/01/2011
Brussels, 27 January 2011
Important notice: since May 2010 business surveys data are classified in accordance with an updated version of the Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NACE rev. 2) causing a potential break in series at this date. The Business Climate Indicator (BCI) for the euro area increased further in January, albeit at a slower pace. The level of the indicator is approaching historical peak reached in spring 2007, suggesting that the recovery in industry will continue in the coming months. The rise in the BCI is due to strong increases in export order books, order books and in production trend observed in recent months. By contrast, managers' assessment of production expectations was more cautious. Finally, their appraisal of stocks of finished goods remained unchanged, standing at very low level by historical standards.
The BCI is based on a factor analysis of the euro area aggregate balances (seasonally adjusted) of five of the monthly questions in the industry survey (only employment and selling-price expectations are excluded).
Full details of the Business Climate Indicator are available on the Europa website:
The next BCI Results are due to be published on 27 January 2011.
