"Europæisk rendezvous" på den internationale filmfestival i Cannes
20 europæiske film, der har fået støtte fra EU's Media-program, er blevet udvalgt til at blive vist på den 63. internationale filmfestival i Cannes. 6 af filmene deltager i konkurrencen om De Gyldne Palmer (nærmere oplysninger i bilaget). Den 17. maj er der "europæisk rendezvous" i Cannes, hvor festivalen fejrer det ypperste i europæisk film. EU-kommissær Androulla Vassiliou vil afsløre vinderen af den europæiske talentpris 2010, som gives til det bedste filmprojekt med en europæisk dimension. Sammen med festivalpræsidenten Gilles Jacob vil hun også mødes med filmfolk og repræsentanter for de europæiske og internationale filminstitutioner for at drøfte finansiering for filmskabere.
"Det glæder mig, at europæiske film atter har en fremtrædende plads i Cannes," udtalte kommissær Androulla Vassiliou, hvis ansvarsområde er uddannelse og kultur. "Europa kan være stolt af sin forskelligartede og levende filmkunst. Jeg er også stolt af, at Media-programmet er en del af den succeshistorie. Den økonomiske støtte fra programmet er med til at skabe og bevare tusinder af job i branchen. Den har også til formål at sætte især mindre biografer i stand til at tilpasse sig de teknologiske forandringer og det globale marked."
Digitaliseringen er i dag en stor udfordring for biograferne: En ny digital filmfremviser og server koster ca. 75 000 EUR, hvilket er en stor investering for mange biografer. Senere på året agter Kommissionen at lancere en ordning under Media-programmet, så der kan ydes støtte på op til 50 % af disse udgifter til biografer, der hovedsagelig har europæiske film på programmet.
Samlet set bidrager Media-programmet med 755 mio. EUR i støtte til den europæiske filmindustri i perioden 2007-2013. Der fokuseres især på at forbedre distributionen af europæiske film, på fremstød for dem og på at styrke branchens konkurrenceevne. De produktionsselskaber, der bliver udvalgt til at modtage støtte, får typisk i gennemsnit et tilskud på 50 000 EUR.
Blandt de 10 seneste vindere af De Gyldne Palmer siden 2000 har 8 af dem modtaget støtte fra Media-programmet. Flere af dem blev også oscarvindere for bedste udenlandske film.
