Wanted: new scientific talent to support EU policy-making - The Joint Research Centre launches recruitment drive

Researchers from across the EU are encouraged to apply for a challenging and rewarding job in the European Commission's own research body, the Joint Research Centre (JRC). Working for the JRC brings together research excellence in state-of-the-art facilities, and an opportunity to support EU policy makers by providing independent scientific and technical advice. Competitions are open for researchers in the following fields: chemistry, biology and health sciences; physics; structural mechanics; quantitative policy analysis; spatial sciences; environmental sciences; energy sciences and communication/information technology. European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn said: "The JRC has a unique position at the centre of European science and of EU policy making: an exciting working environment for researcher. I welcome the launch of these competitions and I'm confident we will attract some of Europe's best talents".

The selection procedure opens today. Over 270 successful candidates will be recruited to meet the JRC's needs in the coming years. Recruitment possibilities exist at the JRC’s research institutes, located in Italy (Ispra), Spain (Seville), the Netherlands (Petten), Germany (Karlsruhe) and Belgium (Geel).

The competitions are open to all EU nationals having the required university qualification, a proven record in research and a satisfactory knowledge of English, French or German. Vacancies are available for researchers at AD6 and AD7 levels, corresponding to professional experience of at least three or six years respectively in the chosen field.

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre

The JRC offers a multinational and challenging environment, employing highly qualified staff working at the forefront of scientific and technological developments in support of EU policy making. Using state-of-the-art research facilities, its scientists address a wide variety of topics that are fundamental for the future of the EU and its citizens.

Successful candidates will contribute to JRC research, focused on the following thematic areas:

  • Towards an open and competitive economy

  • Development of a low carbon society

  • Sustainable management of natural resources

  • Safety of food and consumer products

  • Nuclear safety and security

  • Security and crisis management

  • Reference materials and measurements

The JRC has over 2700 staff and an annual budget of about €350 million. It is deeply rooted in the European Research Area (ERA) and connected with more than 1000 scientific bodies worldwide.

The JRC is a Directorate-General of the European Commission. Its mission is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies.

  • The Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) – Geel (BE)

  • The Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) – Karlsruhe (DE) and Ispra (IT)

  • The Institute for Energy (IE) – Petten (NL) and Ispra (IT)

  • The Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC) – Ispra (IT)

  • The Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) – Ispra (IT)

  • The Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) – Ispra (IT)

  • The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) – Seville (ES)
