Mergers: Commission approves proposed acquisition of Triade by Tech Data Europe and Brightstar Europe
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of Triade by Tech Data Europe and Brighstar Europe, two wholesalers of IT, consumer electronics and telecommunication products. After examining the operation, the Commission concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.
Tech Data Corporation - present in the EEA via its subsidiary Tech Data Europe - is a US-based international group involved primarily in the wholesale distribution of IT products.
Brightstar Corporation - which owns Brightstar Europe together with Tech Data Corporation - is a US-based international group involved primarily in the wholesale distribution of mobile telephone products.
Triade is active in the wholesale distribution of consumer electronics, IT and telecommunication products, primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.
The Commission assessed the impact of the proposed transaction on the wholesale distribution market of consumer electronics, IT and telecommunication products in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark.
The combined market shares of the parties remain moderate in all of these markets. The Commission's investigation also confirmed that the parties would continue to face a sufficient number of competitors in these markets. The Commission therefore found that the proposed concentration would not give rise to any competition concerns.
The transaction was notified to the Commission on 18 August 2010. More information on the case is available at:
