Commission welcomes the signature by the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania of the decrees implementing the framework agreement on a consensual solution for a return to constitutional order
The signature by the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mr Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, of the decrees implementing the framework agreement between the three main Mauritanian political forces represents a crucial step towards resolving the serious crisis sparked by the August 2008 coup as it signals a return to constitutional order.
Mr Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, said, "I welcome this decision by President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, who, in the overriding interest of the country, has sought to limit the negative consequences for the Mauritanian people by appointing a new transitional government of national unity and entrusting the President of the Senate with leading the country during this transitional phase.
The various Mauritanian political players have shown a spirit of compromise and flexibility in launching a process which will, I hope, put an end to this long period of extra-constitutional management of the country.
This new, significant step forward would not have taken place had it not been for the perseverance and personal commitment of Pre sident Wade, who has succeeded in ensuring that the last remaining obstacles to implementation of the Dakar agreement are overcome."
In partnership with the African Union Commission and the other members of the Contact Group, the European Commission will continue to follow closely the other stages in the implementation of the agreement, including the holding of free and inclusive elections in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
