Company law and corporate governance: public hearing on future priorities for the Action Plan

The European Commission held on 3 May 2006 a public hearing on future priorities for the Action Plan on "Modernising Company Law and Enhancing Corporate Governance in the EU" (see IP/03/716). Over 300 stakeholders participated in a broad and lively exchange of views on a range of corporate governance issues.

Internal Market and Services Commissioner Charlie McCreevy said: "I am very pleased with the interest that stakeholders have shown in this hearing. Their contributions will help us to prepare the future strategy for EU company law and corporate governance, and to ensure that this strategy boosts the competitiveness of Europe's businesses."

The hearing follows a successful public consultation on future priorities for the Action Plan (see IP/05/1639), which enabled the Commission to gather the views of around 270 interested parties.

The hearing was opened by the Director General for Internal Market and Sevices, Alexander Schaub. Four separate panels then discussed the following topics:

  • shareholders' rights and obligations
  • the modernisation and simplification of European Company Law
  • the responsibility of directors/internal control
  • corporate mobility and restructuring.

A report on the outcome of the consultation and hearing will be published before the end May 2006.
