Brussels, 19 September 2006
The management committee for direct payments today backed a European Commission draft Regulation allowing Member States to bring forward payments of direct aids to farmers to 16 October from the usual date of 1 December. The proposal followed requests from a number of Member States following the difficult weather conditions this summer. It will be up to the Member States themselves to decide whether or not to use this possibility, once the Commission has formally adopted the Regulation in the days to come. Advances paid between 16 October and 1 December may be up to 50 percent of the direct payments to be paid to the farmers in respect of the year 2006.
