Commission appoints members to three non-food scientific advisory committees

The European Commission has appointed members of three new scientific advisory committees: the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP), the Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR). These committees were created by the Commission in March this year and replace a number of existing committees (see IP/04/296). The 51 scientists appointed to the committees represent a broad range of scientific skills from across Europe and will advice the Commission on all aspects falling into their remit. Given the breadth of subjects the new committees will cover, the Commission has also established a list of scientist experts with specific skills who may be asked to participate in the work of the committees on an ad hoc basis. These appointments were made following a rigorous and open selection procedure. Nearly 300 scientists responded to a notice inviting applications for membership that was published on the Commission’s Europa website and in the EU’s Official Journal.
Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne said: “I am very pleased with the high level of scientific excellence and independence of the newly appointed members. Scientific risk assessment is at the heart of the EU’s health and consumer protection policies. We need world class scientists and world class advice if we are going to get it right.”
The new committees replace the Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-food products intended for Consumers, the Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment and the Scientific Committee on Medicinal Products and Medical Devices. These committees were created in 1997 along with five scientific committees advising on food safety and animal health issues (see: IP/97/947). The work of these latter committees was taken over by the European Food Safety Authority in May 2003.
