Peter Zangl appointed Deputy Director General of the Information Society Directorate General

Peter Zangl has been appointed Deputy Director General of the Information Society Directorate General. He Zangl will notably be in charge of the administrative and financial implementation of the specific technological research and development programme "User-friendly Information Society", as well as of the other European programmes implemented by the Information Society Directorate General. He will also ensure the contribution of research activities to the e-Europe initiative.

Peter Zangl, EU official of German nationality, 54, is since 1997 Director for the Southern Mediterranean, Near and Middle East, in the Directorate General for External Relations. He joined the Commission in 1978 to work in the field of economic and financial affairs, then moved to DG Budget where he was appointed Director in 1988. He then worked in the employment and Social Affairs Directorate from 1994 to 1996.
