Vítor Manuel da Silva Caldeira re-elected President of the European Court of Auditors

The 28 members of the European Court of Auditors today re-elected Mr Vítor da Silva Caldeira as the Court’s President for a third three-year term. The President supervises the performance of the Court’s work and represents the institution in its external relations.

Mr Vítor Manuel da Silva Caldeira is Portuguese, and became a member of the European Court of Auditors in March 2000. He was elected as the institution’s 10th President in January 2008. During his first term of office he oversaw a reform of the Court’s structure and decision-making through the introduction of a chamber system. These reforms streamlined the management of the Court, making it more efficient and able to use its resources in the most effective manner. During his second term of office, he led the EU’s auditors through a time when the Court’s opinions on pending financial legislation, as well as its financial and performance audits took on even greater importance because of the financial crisis and the urgent need to help ensure the better management of EU funds.

Prior to becoming President, Mr da Silva Caldeira was Dean of the Court’s CEAD Group, which was responsible for coordination, evaluation, assurance, development and communication. Between January 2002 and March 2006 he was the member responsible for the Court’s statement of assurance, the core of the European Court of Auditors annual report, which is relied upon by the European Parliament for the discharge procedure for the EU budget.

Before joining the Court, Mr da Silva Caldeira held various senior positions in the Portuguese national administration, dealing with audit and financial control. For a detailed curriculum vitae, please see CV
