Services in the knowledge economy. CoR seminar in Logroño, La Rioja, Spain. 9 November 2001
Information technology has transformed the market for many service industries. Now they must adjust to changed circumstances as world economic growth slows down after the technology boom of recent years. These are the issues for discussion on 9 November 2001 at a seminar in Logroño, La Rioja, Spain, organised by Committee of the Regions Commission 6 (Employment, economic policy, single market, industry, SMEs) together with the La Rioja region.
The seminar is a follow up to the opinion of the Committee of the Regions on the European Commission's initiative "internal market strategy for services". The event will provide the Commission with an opportunity to get first hand information from local and regional players in the service sector.
Members of the Committee of the Regions will be joined by representatives of the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Commission and the European Parliament, as well as businesspeople from major service industries, to consider options for European strategies for meeting the challenges of the new economy and the question of the global competitiveness of European service industries. The meeting, hosted by Pedro Sanz Alonzo, CoR member and President of the Government of the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, will also hear about the practical experience of trading within the single market for services.
