EESC president Staffan Nilsson met French agriculture minister Bruno Le Maire : G20 leaders are asked to invest in farmers’ capacity for future global food security
Staffan Nilsson, President of the European Economic and Social Committee met with Bruno Le Maire, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural Affairs and Town and Country Planning yesterday just before the start of G20 meeting of agriculture ministers. Mr Nilsson gave Mr Le Maire his conclusions from the conference Food for everyone - towards a global deal, which took place in Brussels on 23 May 2011 and was attended by the French G20 presidency.
The EESC president laid heavy emphasis on the fact that "We quite simply cannot cope with another agricultural crisis in the world markets. By investing in sustainable and inclusive agriculture we are investing in the future."
Minister Le Maire warmly welcomed and thanked the EESC for its contribution and highly praised the tremendous work done on food security, and which contributed to the preparations of the G20 discussions on the issue. He was confident that G20 presidency and the EESC could further cooperate following the results of the G20 June meeting and the EESC President's recommendations on global food security.
