On Tuesday 8 March 2016, the European Commission will present the 2016 European Semester winter package. Following the publication of the Country Reports in the end of February and as a part of the European Semester process, the College will discuss the economic and fiscal situation of the Member States and take decisions in the context of the Macroeconomic Imbalances Procedure.
The European Union has set up a yearly cycle of economic policy coordination called the European Semester. The process enables the Commission to give policy guidance on the budgetary and economic plans of the Member States, before they adopt final decisions. The Commission also monitors the economies of the Member States for macroeconomic imbalances and reviews the progress towards the jobs, education, innovation, climate and poverty reduction targets of the EU's long-term growth strategy. The winter package that will be presented on 8 March is one of the milestones of this streamlined European Semester cycle.
Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis will debrief on the outcome of the College meeting, including the 2016 European Semester winter package, on Tuesday 8 March 2016 at 17:00 in Strasbourg. Available on EBS.
Press material will be made available on the day.
