Tuesday 16 February: Energy Union - Commission presents energy security package

The news:

The Commission will adopt a sustainable energy security package. It comprises of:

  1. Revision of the Regulation on Security of Gas Supply which intends to improve the EU's resilience to supply disruptions
  2. Revision of the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) Decision which will increase transparency and ensures that IGAs in the energy field comply with applicable EU legislation and policies
  3. Strategy for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and gas storage which ensures that the EU can take full benefit of the diversification potential offered by Liquefied Natural Gas
  4. Strategy for heating and cooling that aims at identifying energy saving potential in heat and cool buildings and industry

The background:

The Energy Union Strategy, one of this Juncker Commission priorities, has created a new momentum to bring about the transition to a low-carbon, secure and competitive economy.

The Commission set out in its Energy Security Strategy how the EU remains vulnerable to external energy shocks and called on policy makers at national and EU level to make clear to citizens the choices involved in reducing our dependency on particular fuels, energy suppliers and routes. The Energy Union builds on this strategy.

Today the EU imports 53% of the energy it consumes. Some countries depend for their gas imports on one main supplier. Diversification of energy sources and suppliers is a key means of improving our energy security. Exploring new supply regions for fuels, exploring new technologies, further developing indigenous resources and improving infrastructure to access new sources of supply are all elements that will contribute to the increased diversification and security of Europe's energy sector.

The event:

Tuesday 16 February: 2016 Press Conference with Vice President Maros Sefcovic and EU Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete, timing tbc.
