The European Commission adopted the Annual Action Programme 2012 for Armenia in the framework of the Eastern Partnership, accelerating justice reform and preparing the ground for increased bilateral relations, political association and economic integration with the EU.
In the framework of the Eastern partnership the European Commission has provided new funding to modernise Georgia's agriculture, as well as build up the institutions responsible for preparing its political association and economic integration with the EU.
Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou attends opening of Paralympic Games in London
Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, will attend the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in London on 29 August (starts 21:30 Brussels time). " I am certain that the Paralympic Games will be nothing short of inspirational for all of us – whether athletes, spectators or viewers at home . I am looking forward to attending the opening and wish all the athletes an enjoyable games and good luck," said the Commissioner. Athletes with physical disabilities compete in the Paralympics. From 29 August to 9 September, more than 4 000 athletes from 174 nations will challenge each other in more than 500 medal events covering 21 sports. To ensure fair competition, competitors are classified in six different categories to ensure that athletes with similar function and abilities compete against each other. The categories are amputee, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, wheelchair, visually impaired and 'Les Autres', covering disabilities that do not fall into the other five categories. The European Commission has called on the Polish telecoms regulator (UKE) to amend or withdraw its proposal to give alternative operators only limited access to Telekomunikacja Polska's (TP) fibre networks. In the Commission's view, UKE's decision could have a negative effect on competition and the future development of fibre networks, and thus limit offers available to consumers and businesses. This is the second time that the Commission has issued a recommendation under Article 7a of the Telecoms Directive ( MEMO/11/321).
