Antitrust: Commission publishes guidance on application of competition rules in car sector
The European Commission has published a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the application of EU antitrust rules in the motor vehicle sector. The FAQs provide stakeholders with guidance on how the Commission applies these rules, in particular in the markets for repair and maintenance services and spare parts.
Commission clears acquisition of Gavilon Holdings by Marubeni Corporation
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of Gavilon Holdings by Marubeni Corporation. Gavilon Holdings is a United States commodity management company, mainly active in grains, fertilizers and energy products. Marubeni Corporation is a Japanese general trading company with worldwide activities in the handling of products and the provision of services in a broad range of sectors. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

Aarhus to be European Capital of Culture in Denmark in 2017
The independent selection panel assessing the cities applying to future European Capitals of Culture has recommended Aarhus for the title in 2017. Aarhus beat off the challenge of Sønderborg to represent Denmark. Cyprus is the other Member State in which a city will host the title in five years' time. The two winning cities will be formally nominated by the EU's Council of Ministers in May 2013.
Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Commission Vice President, is travelling to Nairobi where she is to meet Prime Minister Odinga, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ongeri, and other Kenyan leaders on 28 August. As Kenya is preparing for national elections in March 2013, the EU reiterates its support to the efforts of the Kenyan people to build democracy, security and prosperity in their country. Catherine Ashton regrets the loss of life in the conflict in south-eastern Kenya and appeals to the communities involved to cease violence and resort to peaceful means of conflict resolution.
