The European Commission has approved under EU state aid rules the annual financing regime for the Dutch public service broadcasters in light of amendments made to the financing regime and formal commitments submitted by the Dutch authorities. The implementation of the commitments will inter alia clarify the definition of the public service remit and the entrustment of new media services and will limit the financing to what is necessary to fulfil the broadcasters' public service tasks. The Commission has therefore concluded that the commitments are a suitable means to ensure compliance with EU state aid rules.

  • Commission takes important step to improve the quality of aviation data to make flights safer and easier to plan

The European Commission has today adopted rules to improve the quality of aeronautical data and aeronautical information. This will make it easier to schedule more flights and increase the safety of aviation even further as part of the Single European Sky, the Commission's ambitious initiative to harmonise air space and air traffic management throughout the European Union. The new legislation concerns the quality of aeronautical data and aeronautical information such as terrain and obstacle data or aerodrome mapping data. It supplements the existing provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex XV. Improving quality levels will allow more accurate procedures of air traffic management, notably to support new concepts of operations such as precision-area navigation (P-RNAV). This legislation is also a necessary first step for the deployment of the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) programme that will depend on the quality of the loaded data or information to allow the use of electronic and digital tools accessible by all aviation operators. The regulation has been developed in the framework of a mandate of Eurocontrol, which provided the necessary technical expertise. For further information on the Single European Sky:

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the German cable network operator Unitymedia GmbH by Liberty Global Europe Holding B.V. (LGE) of The Netherlands. The Commission concluded that the concentration would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.
