The sustainability of social services at a time when large savings in public spending are required is the main focus of European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion László Andor at the 20th European Social Services Conference in Copenhagen. He will insist that "We have to seek new paths to growth that do not involve spending more, but also finding ways to spend more effectively — alongside better governance and greater competitiveness. Our approach needs to be valid both for the crisis and for the long term". He will explain that thorough structural reforms are needed to promote jobs-rich and inclusive growth requiring innovative, effectively funded social services which are successful at helping people to fulfil their social and economic potential. Andor will also encourage Member States to support these reforms through targeted use of EU structural funds. "Social policy and social services are an investment in society that will pay off in the longer term — by helping build a more inclusive and more prosperous society", he will conclude. !!!
