Single European Sky: 10 years on and still not delivering

The Single European Sky, the flagship project to create a single European airspace – tripling capacity and halving air traffic costs – is "not delivering". Vice-President Siim Kallas, European Commissioner for transport, today announced his intention to present new legislative proposals in Spring 2013 to accelerate implementation, as well as taking all enforcement actions possible, including infringements where necessary.

Europe approves allocations of € 500 million of Food for the Most Deprived programme for 2013

The allocation of EU funds for the 2013 Food for the Most Deprived programme was voted through the Single CMO Management Committee today. It is expected that more than 18 million people in 19 EU Member States will benefit from the € 500 million budget available for the most deprived. This will be the last year that the scheme will run in this form, funded from the CAP. New proposals for a broader, more flexible scheme, more closely linked to social cohesion policy, are due to be presented later this month under the responsibility of EU Social Affairs Commissioner Laszlo Andor.

European Commission boosts resilience through emergency aid in the Horn of Africa

The European Commission is increasing by €30 million its aid to the Horn of Africa, helping a million people in Somalia and Ethiopia in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The primary goal is to support immediate life-saving activities with an important share of these funds dedicated to helping build the resilience of vulnerable communities to withstand future disasters.

Count-down to the second launch of Galileo satellites

The countdown has started for the launch of Galileo's third and fourth satellites —scheduled for tomorrow at 18:15 UTC from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. This second pair of EADS Astrium satellites will be put into orbit on-board a Soyuz rocket operated by Arianespace. The resulting initial constellation of four satellites will allow the validation and fine-tuning of the system before a new series of 22 satellites will be launched from 2013.

Eurostat regional yearbook 2012 - Data on more than 1 300 regions in the EU - The Statistical Atlas: A new interactive tool on the Eurostat website

In which EU region does agriculture contribute the most to the economy? And where is Research and Development most significant? Which region is the most densely populated? Where is the unemployment rate lowest and where is the GDP per inhabitant highest? The answers to these questions and many more are found in the 2012 regional yearbook published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. The publication gives an overview of the most recent economic, social and demographic developments in the 271 NUTS level 2 regions and, for some indicators, the 1 303 NUTS level 3 regions of the 27 Member States of the European Union as well as, when available, the regions in the four EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), the acceding country (Croatia) and three of the candidate countries (Montenegro, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey). As the publication contains many maps, which are the most user friendly way to present regional statistics, a new interactive tool, the Statistical Atlas, is also launched today on the Eurostat website. This tool contains maps of all regions in the EU (down to NUTS level 3) as well as the possibility to display rivers, cities and roads. On these maps, the full range of statistical indicators included in the Regional Yearbook can be selected and displayed in a clear and readable way. The Eurostat regional yearbook 2012 includes fourteen chapters on economy, population, health, education, labour market, structural business statistics, tourism, information society, agriculture, transport, science, technology & innovation, European cities, coastal regions and territorial typologies.

Monitoring the application of EU public procurement rules across the EU - Annual Public Procurement Implementation Review

The European Commission has today published the first edition of the Annual Public Procurement Implementation Review, assessing the implementation of the rules on public procurement in the EU. Purchases by public authorities and utility companies, when they are of a cross-border nature, fall within the scope of EU law and account for nearly 20% of EU GDP. The correct implementation and efficient application of the rules by Member States remains a constant challenge. Collecting, analysing and reporting on the data regarding the application of procurement rules by Member States is essential to better understanding problems and addressing concerns. This new Review should help achieve this. In future the Commission also intends to use the Review as a knowledge-sharing tool, the findings of which will feed into and drive new policy initiatives. More information including the Review itself: http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/publicprocurement/implementation/index_en.htm

Vice-President N. Kroes warns industry to speed up Do Not Track standard development or face enforcement measures

Vice President Neelie Kroes today gave a blunt warning that time is running out to create a Do Not Track (DNT) standard for internet users. Many industry players are undermining this effort to make it easier for the industry to comply with the EU's ePrivacy rules, hurting themselves and users, and putting themselves at risk of enforcement measures. Kroes said: "Let me be frank: standardisation work is not going according to plan …I know that my colleagues across the Atlantic, at the Federal Trade Commission, feel the same. What is the problem? Top of my list comes the watering down of the standard. It must be designed to let people choose to not be tracked. The clue is in the name: do NOT track. Online privacy and online business need to go hand in hand. People won't use what they don't trust. And they will stop using what they learn to distrust." ( SPEECH/12/716)
