Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, has launched the Centre for European Union Small and Medium Enterprises (EU SME Centre) in Beijing on 5 November. Funded by the European Commission, this new venture will provide information, advice, training and matchmaking opportunities for European SMEs wishing to export to or invest in the Chinese market.
The European Commission has authorised, under EU state aid rules, Spanish aid for the restructuring of CajaSur, a saving bank, and the sale of its banking activities. The Commission considers that the restructuring plan adequately addresses the problems that led to the bail-out of the bank in May 2010, whilst avoiding undue distortions of competition.
Commission clears acquisition by Sun Capital of Vroom & Dreesmann
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition by Sun Capital of sole control of Vroom & Dreesmann, both of the Netherlands. Vroom & Dreesmann is active in the retail sales of consumer goods through department stores and operates self-service restaurants in the Netherlands and Belgium. Sun Capital is a US private equity company. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
The EU approved EUR 28.3 million to enhance Regional Private Sector Development in the Caribbean
Today, the European Commission approved EUR 28,3 million grant financing for a Regional Private Sector Development Programme, to be executed over 5 years in the Caribbean region. This programme will contribute to the gradual integration of the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) into the world economy, enhancing regional economic growth and by extension alleviate poverty. It is integral to assisting the region in responding to the opportunities and challenges offered by the CARIFORUM-European Commission Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), as well as other new and existing trade arrangements. More specifically, the Programme will enhance competitiveness and promote innovation in the regional private sector as well as stronger trade and investment relations at regional level. La Commission européenne a adopté son sixième rapport sur le maintien de l'obligation de visa par certains pays tiers, en violation du principe de réciprocité. Ce rapport montre que l'on est proche d’une réciprocité totale et qu'il ne reste que de très rares cas de «non réciprocité».
Three films co-funded by the European Union's MEDIA programme were among those honoured at the closing ceremony of the International Rome Film Festival on 5 November. "Hævnen/In a better world" by Susanne Bier received two of the main awards: The Grand Prix of the Jury and the Prix of the Public for the best film. Toni Servillo got the Prix of the Jury as best actor for his role in the film "Una vita tranquilla/A quite life" of Claudio Cupellini. The Prix of best Italian actor was awarded to Francesco di Leva in the same film.
The government of Haiti has requested EU assistance in response to Hurricane Tomas, which is currently passing through the Caribbean region. The request was received in the afternoon of November 05. As a preparatory measure, the Haitian authorities have asked for tents, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, hygiene and water purification kits, and other small items.
