The first ever "Town Hall"-style meeting between local
and regional authorities, developing countries and the EU institutions is taking
place today in Brussels at the Committee of the Regions. Around 300
representatives from local and regional authorities from all over the world are
meeting with their EU counterparts to ensure their increasingly important
contribution to development is recognised.

The Commission has proposed to the Council a 15-month extension of anti-dumping measures regarding certain leather footwear from China and Vietnam. The original duties, which are 16.5% on Chinese shoes and 10% on Vietnamese shoes, were imposed in 2006. Following an industry request, the Commission investigated to see whether the measures should continue after their normal expiry date. The investigation found an extension of the measures to be justified.
30% of Christmas lights present an obvious and direct risk of fire and electric shocks according to a new report published today by the European Commission. The report presents the conclusions of a joint market surveillance project involving authorities from 5 Member States - Hungary, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Netherlands - as well as the European Commission. Testing was carried out between November 2007- May 2009 at different intervals on 196 random samples of lighting chains across the entire price range. The samples were checked against over 20 administrative and technical requirements. Many lighting chains failed multiple tests.
