• Europe 2020 - a new economic strategy

  The strategy builds on what has been achieved and the lessons learned. The first priority must be to hasten the exit from the crisis, but the strategy must also provide the building blocks for growth that will be sustainable in the future.

• Financial Crisis - Europe's response

  The global economy is facing a financial crisis involving banking systems, stock markets and the flow of credit. Seeking common strategies to solve the difficulties, European institutions are coordinating national responses and making recommendations to improve the financial system.

• Influenza A (H1N1) - EU coordination

  The influenza A (H1N1) virus is a new virus subtype of influenza affecting humans, which contains segments of genes from pig, bird and human influenza viruses in a combination that has never been observed before. This A (H1N1) virus is the result of a combination of two swine influenza viruses that contained genes of avian and human origin.

• Energy and Climate change

  Climate change and energy security are among the biggest challenges facing mankind. The EU has taken global leadership by committing to cut its emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases by at least 20% of their 1990 levels by 2020. It has also set itself the target of obtaining 20% of its energy supply from renewable energy sources by the same deadline. A package of binding legislation ensures these targets will be met.

• Lisbon Treaty

  European leaders signed the Treaty of Lisbon on 13 December 2007 in order to respond to existing political, economic and social changes with new rules. The main improvements brought about by the treaty include: more efficient decision-making processes, more democracy through a greater role for the European Parliament and national parliaments and more coherence externally.

• European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion 2010

  Poverty and exclusion not only affect the wellbeing of individuals and their ability to play a part in society, they also impair economic development. With this in mind, the EU is stressing the importance of collective responsibility in combating poverty and hence the need to involve public authorities, civil society and enterprise.

• The EU’s role in the world

  The EU is the world’s biggest trader and its currency, the euro, is the second one in international financial markets. It has a web of bilateral and multilateral agreements covering most countries and regions of the globe and spends a billion euros a month in assistance projects in all five continents. Its significant role on the global stage is indisputable.
