• Financial Crisis - Europe's response

  The global economy is facing a financial crisis involving banking systems, stock markets and the flow of credit. Seeking common strategies to solve the difficulties, European institutions are coordinating national responses and making recommendations to improve the financial system.

• Influenza A (H1N1) - EU coordination

  The influenza A (H1N1) virus is a new virus subtype of influenza affecting humans, which contains segments of genes from pig, bird and human influenza viruses in a combination that has never been observed before. This A (H1N1) virus is the result of a combination of two swine influenza viruses that contained genes of avian and human origin.

• Energy and Climate change

  Climate change and energy are some of the biggest challenges facing mankind in the coming years. In March 2007, EU leaders agreed to cut CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020, (30% if global targets can be agreed on), and to set a binding 20% target for the use of renewable energy sources. The EU currently takes an active part in negotiations for a post-Kyoto climate regime.

• Lisbon Treaty

  European leaders signed the Treaty of Lisbon on 13 December 2007 in order to respond to existing political, economic and social changes with new rules. The main improvements brought about by the treaty will include: more efficient decision-making processes, more democracy through a greater role for the European Parliament and national parliaments and more coherence externally.

• Auditors' report on the EU's accounts and spending

  Every year in November the European Court of Auditors presents its report on the EU's accounts, revenue and spending. The auditors check how the financial control systems work and whether EU funds are spent in line with the rules.

• European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009

  The modern world puts emphasis on better use of knowledge and rapid innovation. There is a need for skills and competences that enable people to embrace change as an opportunity and to be open to new ideas in a culturally diverse, knowledge-based society. Europe needs to boost its capacity for creativity and innovation to respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities of globalisation.

• The EU’s role in the world

  The EU is the world’s biggest trader and its currency, the euro, is the second one in international financial markets. It has a web of bilateral and multilateral agreements covering most countries and regions of the globe and spends a billion euros a month in assistance projects in all five continents. Its significant role on the global stage is indisputable.

• Lisbon strategy for Growth & Jobs

  Europe faces major structural challenges – globalisation, climate change and an ageing population. The economic downturn has made these issues even more pressing. The Lisbon strategy addresses these challenges – aiming to stimulate growth and create more and better jobs, while making the economy greener and more innovative.
