Foreign Affairs Council
Overview of the agenda:
The Council, chaired by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, will take stock of the preparations for the Eastern Partnership foreign ministers meeting, which will take place in July in Brussels.
Ministers will discuss developments in the EU's southern neighbourhood, focusing on Syria and Lebanon. The Council will also look at the situation in Mali.
Ministers will also discuss energy in external relations. Energy commissioner Günther Oettinger is expected to attend the lunch.
In the margins of the Council, a meeting of the EU-Albania Stabilisation and Association Council will take place on Tuesday 23 April (9.00).
EU defence ministers will hold their six-monthly meeting in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council. They will discuss the situation in the Sahel, Mali and the EU training mission in Mali during a working dinner (starting at 19.00 on 22 April). NATO deputy secretary general Alexander Vershbow is expected to be present.
During the formal session, starting at 9.00 on Tuesday 23 April, defence ministers will discuss preparations for the European Council on defence in December, with a focus on battlegroups.
They will also be updated about progress of the Commission's task force on defence.
A European Defence Agency steering board meeting is scheduled for 11.00.
