The Environment Council works to promote a harmonious, balanced and sustainable development of the EU’s economic activities. More specifically the council works to ensure the quality of the environment and a prudent and rational utilisation of natural resources. At the international level it promotes measures that contribute to solving global environmental problems.
The Environment Council is composed of environment ministers who meet about four times a year. It decides by qualified majority in codecision with the European Parliament.
