On Tuesday, the College will discuss the draft negotiating directives for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement envisaged between the EU and the United States, in view of presenting a mandate to the Council.
The Commission will also publish a study on the economic benefits of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership for the European economy.
On 13 February 2013, President of the United States of America Barack Obama, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy decided to take their economic relationship to a higher level by agreeing to launch negotiations for a comprehensive trade and investment agreement. When negotiations are completed, this EU-US agreement would be the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated – and it could add 0.5% to the EU's annual economic output.
Karel De Gucht, EU Trade Commissioner, will give a press conference at 5.30pm at the European Parliament press room in Strasbourg.
