Foreign Affairs Council

Flags in front of the Council building

When: 23/07/2012
Where: Justus Lipsius building, Brussels, Belgium
Topic: External relations and foreign affairs
Organiser: Council of the EU

The Council, chaired by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, is expected to discuss the EU's Southern neighbourhood, focusing on Syria and Libya. It will also discuss Sudan and the South Sudan, given the ongoing negotiations between the two countries on outstanding issues, such as border demarcation and payments associated with oil sales. Ministers will also take stock of the latest developments in Mali and the Sahel region.

On Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), ministers will discuss the implementation of the Council conclusions adopted last December, in particular the impact of EU missions, the importance of capabilities and the comprehensive approach. The High Representative will also brief ministers about the strategic dialogue with China.

Over lunch, ministers will discuss energy and foreign policy.

A background briefing will be held in the Council press room on 20 July at 10.00. A press conference will take place at the end of the meeting.

A presidency briefing, agenda and background note will be published on the Council website closer to the date of the meeting.
