Twenty years after the first earth summit, the United Nations organise a conference on sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro on 20-22 June.
Rio+20 will seek renewed political commitment for sustainable development. It will assess progress made and address implementation gaps and emerging challenges. The conference will focus on two themes: "a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication" and "the institutional framework for sustainable development".
President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, Commissioner for Environment Janez Potočnik, Commissioner for Climate action Connie Hedegaard and Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Cioloş will represent the EU at the event.
